How to Recover from a Spin Video – Catherine Cavagnaro

Episode 155 ThumbnailI'm excited about a new video I just posted of my interview with Dr. Catherine Cavagnaro. In it, Catherine talks about some of the debunked theories of lift that some flight instructors still talk about and then about how lift really works. She explains stalls and then shows videos that show how a skidding stall is more dangerous than a slipping stall. These stall/spins often happen in the traffic pattern as pilots are turning from base to final, especially if they have a tailwind on base and overshoot the turn to final. Adding extra rudder to try to “speed up the turn” often results in a fatal stall/spin accident. Pilots should instead add power and go around.

Catherine then talks about spin recovery and how spin recovery differs among airplanes. Therefore, you need to read the POH for your airplane, so that you understand the best technique for recovering from a stall in that airplane. If your POH doesn’t include a spin recovery information, then you may want to use the acronym PARE, which is:

Power to Idle
Ailerons Neutral
Full Opposite Rudder for the direction of the turn
Elevator Forward
Then as the aircraft recovers, pull back on the elevator to level off.

Plus, you'll see all of her videos that we talked about during the interview. They include early smoke tunnel research on lift, views of yarn tuffs on her airplane as it stalls and spins in different configurations, and wake turbulence demonstrations. Just click on the image to view the video, or you can find it at: https://youtu.be/JMMgJ5AhK-o

Also, if I can ask a small favor, please click here to subscribe to my YouTube channel, so you'll be notified when I release new videos and yes, it's Free. Also, you'll be notified whenever I give a Live presentation on YouTube. For example if you were subscribed in the past, you would have received a notification for my video interview with Red Bull Air Racer Mike Goulian, which includes some of his aerobatic videos.

Did Aviation News Talk Podcast stop Downloading?
I continue to produce new podcasts almost every week. But, you may not be getting new shows if, like me, you've spent fewer hours listening to podcasts during the pandemic. That's because the Apple Podcast app will stop updating a podcast subscription if you have more than five episodes downloaded, but not listened to! If that's happened to you, the solution is simple. you can just listen to any part of any episode, and a new episode will download at the next update.

And if you're not listening to the Aviation News Talk podcast each week, here are some things we've talked about in recent episodes:

If you're unfamiliar with how to listen to podcasts, the easiest way to do it is to download one of our dedicated apps for your phone. Just go to the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store, and search for "Aviation News Talk." Or, click here for the dedicated app for iOS and dedicated app for Android. And podcasts are free, so they'll never cost you anything!

And if you do find value in the show and would like to support it with a small contribution of a few dollars a month, you can do that with a credit card via Patreon, where you’ll also read about the goodies we’ll give you at various contribution levels. Or you can make a one-time donation or a monthly donation via PayPal.

And please tell all of your aviation friends about the show!
